Two monsoons, two summers
Sri Lanka never has an off-season, only a wrong coast. From December to March the south and west are golden; from May to September the east coast comes alive. The highlands sit in between and reward early mornings all year.
Small island, slow roads
Distances look tiny and take twice as long as you expect. That is a feature. Take the train through the hill country, hire a tuk-tuk for a day on the coast, and plan three places instead of seven.
Rice and curry is not one dish
It is five to ten, served together: dhal, jackfruit, beetroot, coconut sambol, a fish or chicken curry, papadam. Eat where the buses stop, order the lunch packet, and always accept the second helping.
A little respect goes far
Cover shoulders and knees at temples, remove shoes and hats, never turn your back on a Buddha image for a photo. Learn 'istuti' (thank you) and watch the whole day change.
